Discover Zahid Nihari

If you’re looking for an unforgettable dining experience in Streamwood, Illinois, Zahid Nihari is the place to be. Nestled at 948 S Barrington Rd, this cozy spot specializes in authentic Pakistani cuisine, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for family meals, casual outings, or even special celebrations. The heart and soul of the menu is, of course, the famous Nihari-slow-cooked beef stew infused with aromatic spices, but Zahid Nihari offers so much more to delight the palate.

Walking into Zahid Nihari, you're greeted by the delicious aroma of spices, the rich scent of simmering stews, and the warmth of a family-run business. The restaurant boasts a welcoming interior with traditional décor that reflects the culture and heritage behind the food. The friendly staff and attentive service make each visit feel like a personal affair, ensuring that every guest enjoys a memorable dining experience.

The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Nihari. This traditional dish is cooked for hours to achieve its melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. The beef is slow-braised in a flavorful blend of spices that bring both heat and depth to the dish. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a loyal regular, the Nihari is a must-try. It's served with a side of fresh naan or steamed rice, which perfectly complements the stew's robust flavors. The dish is rich and savory, perfect for anyone craving a hearty meal.

In addition to the Nihari, Zahid Nihari also offers an array of other Pakistani favorites that are worth exploring. The menu features a selection of biryanis, kebabs, and curries, each made with the same attention to detail and use of fresh ingredients. The chicken or mutton biryani, with its fragrant rice and perfectly spiced meat, is a popular choice among patrons. The grilled kebabs, smoky and tender, also make for an excellent starter or side dish. And if you’re looking for something a little lighter, the restaurant offers flavorful vegetarian options like daal (lentils) and sabzi (vegetable curries) that are perfect for those seeking a plant-based meal.

What sets Zahid Nihari apart is not just the quality of the food, but the consistency. Regular diners often praise the restaurant for delivering the same exceptional quality every time. Whether it’s the richness of the Nihari or the perfect balance of spices in the biryani, Zahid Nihari ensures that every dish is crafted with care and authenticity. It’s clear that the chefs take great pride in their craft, ensuring that each dish is prepared with the utmost attention to detail.

For those with a sweet tooth, Zahid Nihari also offers a selection of traditional desserts to end the meal on a sweet note. The Gulab Jamun, deep-fried dough balls soaked in sugary syrup, is a crowd favorite. Another beloved dessert is Kheer, a creamy rice pudding flavored with cardamom and garnished with pistachios and almonds-ideal for those who enjoy a rich, comforting dessert.

The ambiance at Zahid Nihari further enhances the overall experience. The restaurant’s casual yet refined setting provides the perfect backdrop for enjoying a leisurely meal with friends or family. The warmth of the atmosphere is matched only by the hospitality, as the staff goes above and beyond to make diners feel at home.

Whether you’re a Streamwood local or just passing through, Zahid Nihari is a destination for those seeking an authentic taste of Pakistani cuisine. The menu offers something for everyone, from the tender Nihari to the perfectly spiced biryanis and mouthwatering kebabs. With its warm hospitality, flavorful dishes, and inviting ambiance, Zahid Nihari continues to be a favorite for many, and it’s easy to see why. Each meal is a reflection of the restaurant's commitment to serving exceptional food that highlights the rich flavors of Pakistani cuisine, making every visit a special occasion.

  • I have been there a lot of times and their food is always exceptional. I tried the samosa chaat which was delicious. We also tried chicken seekh kabab, chicken tikka, and chicken fajita omelette.. they are all amazing. We have tried almost everything from the menu and everything was so great. We go there weekly. They know us now as their frequent customer. Their desi food is great but they don’t have burgers available. But definitely try this place if you love authentic pakistani food.

  • We went to Zahid Nihari for breakfast on Sunday. Their food is decent. Nice open space for seating. Food was served quickly and their service was friendly. I liked the paratha and omelette. Halwa puri was also good (but a little too greasy). Their portions are huge. Qeema paratha and aloo paratha were OK. A little too doughy with no filling near the outer edges of paratha. We didn’t like their nihari. They were unfortunately out of Paya. Overall, Good option for breakfast if you are near by. If you are driving for an hour like we did, Devon street has better options. Update: Went back there in August 2025. Nihari quality has improved. Pretty good. We also liked the Karachi biryani.

  • We were visiting the Chicago suburbs and wanted to try a Pakistani home-style breakfast in a new town — and Zahid Nihari in Streamwood delivered beyond expectations! I took the family for breakfast on a Friday morning, and it was honestly the best Pakistani breakfast I’ve had in the U.S. in a long time. The parathas — both regular and lacha — were perfectly made. The desi omelets were delicious, and the chicken sandwiches and zingers were all full of flavor. The halwa puri was mouthwatering, and the chai was fantastic! The environment was peaceful, starting with a beautiful Quran recitation playing softly in the background. But the main highlight was the amazing service — especially from Ms. Prajina, who made us feel completely at home. She was warm, attentive, and truly elevated the whole experience. If you’re craving the taste of Lahore in Chicago — this spot is a must-visit! 100% halal and 100% worth it.

  • We tried the halwa puri here and it was really good. The puris were gigantic and chana and aloo curry serving was generous. We were 4 people and only ordered two but still couldn’t finish. I didn’t really like the halwa as it was too sweet. We also got doodh patti chai which was delicious. Staff is very helpful and hospitable. We’ll definitely return to try other items. Overall 9/10

  • Halwa Puri Review Man, Halwa Puri is just awesome! The puris are perfectly crispy, the chana has that spicy kick, and the halwa is sweet and buttery — all together it’s the best combo ever. You can’t go wrong with this classic. Every bite hits different. Definitely a favorite!

  • Came here for breakfast while visiting Chicago, and the food did not disappoint. We ordered the halwa puri and the omelette with paratha — both were delicious and served in generous portions. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for authentic Karachi-style nashta!

  • Delicious food and excellent service. Recommend: zahid nahari-very tender meat and excellent flavorful garlic naan- very flavorful with crispy crust karachi special chicken-flavorful and piled high (just a little difficult to serve without spilling on the small plate)

  • We tried Zahid Nihari Halwa Puri, and it was absolutely amazing. The puris are super big, perfectly crispy, and cooked just right. The cholay are very flavorful and truly authentic, and the halwa is rich and up to the mark. We also tried the nihari, which was good as well. Overall, this is one of the best halwa puri experiences in North America. Highly recommended! Looking forward to trying their other dishes next time.
